Available for 200-hour Yoga teacher training graduates with sufficient teaching experience who are interested in a Yoga therapy pathway, and for those with IAYT certification who are interested in deepening their understanding of the human body. This is a required core module in the Integral Yoga Therapy 800-hour certification program.

Course Description:

Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga. (IAYT)

To investigate this multidimensional and integrated approach to wellness, dive deep into an educational and experiential exploration of the human body as it relates to the practices of Yoga.

Deepen understanding of the structure and function of the human body while examining pathophysiology that leads to suffering. From a model of ease, examine what processes lead to dis-ease and what interventions can assist in restoring the whole being to health and wellbeing.

Guided by Dr. John Murphy, DO and C-IAYT Satya Lynn, integrate relevant medical research with the tools of Yoga therapy. Using the branches of Integral Yoga Therapy, develop skills to support individuals in prevention and healing dis-ease and chronic conditions while cultivating a deeper understanding of the requirements to live in balance and ease.

Course Objectives:

In this 60 hour hybrid module, students will:

  • Study in-depth the structure and function of the human body
  • Review each basic body system to understand proper operation from a state of ease
  • Investigate the role of movement and Yoga practices on the body systems
  • Explore disease processes of the human body and connection to dis-ease
  • Discuss how dis-ease affects body-mind-spirit from an Eastern and Western perspective
  • Examine how healing works from a whole-system-science perspective
  • Incorporate tools of Yoga therapy with the knowledge of anatomy and current Yoga related medical research
  • Integrate clinical considerations with relevant basic science
  • Utilize critical thinking skills while observing and assessing students and clients, creating care plans, and evaluating effectiveness of practices for implementation
  • Develop communication skills and awareness necessary for interfacing with the medical community

Course Structure:

  • Section A: Human Body : Ease--Structure and Function of the Human Body
  • Section B: Human Body: Dis-ease--Pathophysiology and Disease process
  • Section C: Human Body: Ease and Dis-ease-- Integration, Application, and Assessment

Over the course of eight months, students will progress through three sections of learning. Section A and B consist of a series of pre-recorded videos and assignments students work through at their own pace. Meet-ups occur weekly to check in, review, and apply learning while keeping students engaged, motivated, and on-track with course material.

Prior to the start of the course, students complete a pre-module assessment to determine basic understanding and will have access to a series of videos to review the 200 hour YA standard competencies in anatomy and physiology before beginning the module.

The course meets weekly for live check-ins on Zoom. Students meet every Wednesday from 7-9 pm ET/ 4-6pm PT.

When attending live sessions, students are encouraged to bring questions and participate in group discussions and activities. Sessions will be recorded for review and accessible for reference throughout the course. Students must attend 95% of the weekly sessions. Those who are unable to attend will notify the faculty and staff of their absence. Students with excused absences will watch the session’s recording and write a one page reflection.

At the completion of the virtual learning Section A and B, students will assemble in person with a physician and Yoga therapist for review, application and assessment of information to complete Section C and complete the course. Students will be given case studies and asked to apply what they have learned, answering questions and demonstrating competencies relating to these cases.

Section C is mandatory for completion of the Human Body module certification and is currently scheduled to be held at the Satchidananda Ashram, Yogaville campus in August 2022. However due to the current pandemic this location/date/format is subject to change.

Testimonials

“I am THRILLED at the prospect of learning A & P from Dr. John Murphy who has served as a family medicine physician for 13 years-- I could not be more excited.

As a research health psychologist who has worked with a range of doctors over the past 20 years, I can say with confidence that hearing someone chose the DO (rather than MD) path AND chose Family Medicine as their area [rather than anything else] tells me a lot about that person. It helps to understand that these choices are the choices that typically go with folks who want to practice patient centered care. These are the choices made by folks who support the biopsychosocial model and seek to treat the whole person. In hearing him describe his practice and his decision to step away from insurance based decision making and toward Integrative Direct Care based out of a HOME, I am all the more enthused [and possibly erroneously seeing him as a modern day Patch Adams]. All in all, I could not be happier and am excited at the prospect of taking a deep dive into a critical part of our training.”

“Dr. John is a fountain of knowledge --combined with his down-to-earth approach--he makes learning engaging and relatable.”

Dr. John has a humble attitude and kind heart which makes his teaching a joy! He gives students a chance to succeed and truly understands how people learn.”

“I was impressed with the depth of knowledge Dr. John shares with the students. I feel more comfortable speaking to a medical audience and am inspired to go out and share what I have learned with the world!”

"Satya lives and breathes Yoga. She brings a positive approach and knowledge to her teaching that seamlessly integrates the theory with the practical."

"Satya teaches from her peaceful and loving spirit. She is extremely knowledgeable with a contagious positive attitude! She is very motivating because her comments and suggestions are authentic and constructive.”

"Satya is unlike any other teacher I have had because she not only is certified as a Yoga therapist but also has a background in exercise physiology, athletic training and physical therapy. She understands the body so well that she is able to explain how to adapt the practices for those with physical limitations. Above all, she is easily approached when I have a question or concern. Her knowledge of the spiritual side as well as the subtle practices add much to her teaching that I don't get with other instructors. She is inspiring!"

“Health, not disease, is your birthright. Strength not weakness is your heritage; courage not sorrow; peace not restlessness; knowledge not ignorance. May you attain this divine heritage and shine, radiating joy, peace, and knowledge everywhere.”

FAQ

  • 1. This course is an investment in time, resources, and energy. How do I know if it is right for me?

This essential course is designed for current Yoga teachers, serious Yoga practitioners, and Yoga Therapists to become familiar with knowledge of human anatomy and physiology while improving teaching skills, learning how to guide students safely and effectively, and enhancing the ability to design balanced sessions.

The faculty have distilled the subject of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology into a dynamic, practical course that is directly relevant to Yoga practice, teaching, and applying concepts within the context of Yoga therapy. Retain and incorporate what you learn as you examine and apply concepts with peers, and then explore further with corresponding anatomy-focused Hatha practices with senior Integral Yogis and wellness professionals.

  • 2. I already learned anatomy and physiology in my past studies. Can I test out of this class?

    • As part of the IYTh 800 hour program, IYTh students may not test out of this course.
    • If you are part of the IYTh program and have extensive experience in anatomy and physiology, you can join the Student Support Team which is a peer-led opportunity to share your knowledge with those students who are newer to studies of the human body.
    • Those students who are taking the course for continuing education must complete all course requirements to receive the certificate of completion.
  • 3. If I can’t test out of this course, can I just audit the course?

After a qualifying evaluation, IYTh will provide a tuition adjustment for those students who can provide documented proof of equivalent anatomy and physiology study in addition to a medical license or certification to validate proficiency in application and knowledge of competencies.

  • 4. This class spans over a long period of time. What if I have to miss some live sessions?

Each Wednesday evening is a live session to keep students on track and apply concepts learned. Students are required to attend the live sessions, and must attend at least 95% of these live sessions for certification. If a session is missed, students make up the absence by writing a summary after watching the recording.

  • 5. Is this course just about learning anatomy and physiology or will there be some relevance to Yoga Therapy and sharing the practices of Yoga?

The basis for this course is to deepen the student’s understanding of the structure and function of the human body, both in a healthy and diseased state. By learning these underlying concepts, students can then integrate and apply the knowledge as Yoga teachers and Yoga therapists by understanding how to choose evidence-based practices and why these practices are effective for a specific individual, condition, or situation.

During the course, students will learn concepts during the self-paced sections and practice relevant application of Yoga skills in the live sessions.
